Community Foundation and Humanities Council Honor Grantees

On Friday, February 25, 2005, the Middlesex County Community Foundation and the Connecticut Humanities Council held a reception honoring six organizations dedicated to preserving, and increasing public awareness of, Middlesex County's rich heritage. These organizations recently received grants from the Middlesex County Community Foundation, totaling $14,375, with funding from the Connecticut Humanities Council and River View Cemetery in Essex. "The Community Foundation is grateful to these partners in grantmaking for their vision and generous support; together we are able to broaden the appreciation of our local stories and history," said Patti Anne Vassia, President of the Community Foundation.

The following grants have been awarded to support Heritage Enhancement initiatives county-wide:

  • Antiquarian and Landmarks Society will expand its publicity and educational programming at the Amasa Day House in East Haddam.
  • Chester Historical Society will hire interns to catalog the Society's collection of artifacts reflecting life and industry in Chester.
  • Connecticut Society of Sons of the American Revolution will produce brochures about Nathan Hale Schoolhouse in East Haddam.
  • Deep River Historical Society will be offering a multi-generational educational program, "History is Ongoing", at the Stone House in Deep River.
  • Essex Historical Society will upgrade its computer system to provide better access to information on the Society's extensive collection.
  • Wadsworth Mansion at Long Hill Estate in Middletown will develop a cultural landscape plan to record the estate's landscape history and provide a strategy for long-term management.

The Middlesex County Community Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life in Middlesex County. Since its founding in 1997, the Community Foundation has provided more than $500,000 in grants to 100 organizations for the arts; cultural and heritage programs; educational activities; environmental improvements; and for health and human services. The Foundation assists donors meet their philanthropic objectives through the creation of restricted and unrestricted endowments. Income from these endowments, together with funds from charitably minded organizations and individuals, are used to award grants to non-profit organizations that have a positive impact on our community.
